Gastric Sleeve surgery in Mexico
The gastric sleeve procedure is also know as gastric sleeve resection, sleeve gastrectomy, vertical sleeve gastrectromy, tube gastrectomy and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Gastric sleeve surgery is a relatively new procedure when it comes to bariatric surgery. It is typically used to safely start the surgical weight loss process if a patient is too obese or sick to have more invasive weight loss surgeries such as the mini gastric bypass or the full gastric bypass. It is also used for patients who or are not candidates for the lap band surgery in mexico.
According to The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
"This is the most useful application of gastric sleeve surgery at this time, because it appears to be faster and/or easier than other weight loss surgeries in these high-risk people".
How does it work?
Traditionally this weight loss procedure has first been performed in Europe as a first stage on severely obese patients. In recent years the gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico is being adopted as a stand alone surgery for lower BMI patients as well. This operation is performed laparoscopically, meaning that the surgeon makes small incisions rather then a single large incision. A viewing tube with a small camera (laparoscope) and other tiny instruments are inserted into these small incisions to remove part of the stomach.
The tube-shaped stomach that is left is sealed closed with staples. One of the advantages is that the portion of the stomach that is removed is the area responsible for secreting the hormone "Ghrelin". The near elimination of this "hunger hormone" results in a significant reduction or loss of "feeling hungry".
Overall, it is a less complicated operation than either mini gastric bypass or full gastric bypass, since the pyloric valve and small intestine are left intact. The gastric sleeve does not involve implanting a medical device into the body in order to restrict eating as it is done in lap-band surgery.
Advantages & Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery
During the first six months to a year: On average patients who underwent the gastric sleeve procedure in Mexico, typically can expected to lose approximately 30% to 50% of their excess body weight. This initial weight loss will make it safer to proceed with the second-stage of the process, either mini gastric bypass or gastric bypass surgery in Mexico, which involves rerouting the small intestine. The timing of the second procedure will depend on the rate of weight loss following the gastric sleeve surgery.
Summary of the advantages and benefits after your Gastric Sleeve operation in Mexico:
- 30% to 50% excess weight loss within 12 months of the procedure.
- Up to 70% within 2 years
- This procedure is less invasive than gastric bypass.
- Less nutritional supplements are necessary as is needed after a gastric bypass.
- No device is needed to be implanted in the body, such as a Lap-band.
- It is less risky for high BMI patients
- More suitable for patients with prior surgery or complex medical conditions.
- Most food items can be consumed after your gastric sleeve procedure in Mexico
- Additional weight loss surgery can still be performed if required.
Within 2 years: Patients who have had the gastric sleeve procedure in Mexico done as a stand-alone operation can expect to achieve a loss of 60% to 70% of their excess weight. If weight loss is insufficient following gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico, a malabsorptive weight loss procedure such as the mini gastric bypass or full gastric bypass in Mexico may be performed in order to promote further weight loss.
