Blepharoplasty

The Blepharoplasty Surgery Procedure (Eye Lid Lift)

Where will my blepharoplasty be performed?

Blepharoplasty is often performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure is performed at a surgery center, in a plastic surgeon’s office or in a hospital facility. If patients are having other plastic surgery procedures at the same time as they are having their blepharoplasty, our plastic surgeons may suggest that they spend 1 night at our facility

How is the Blepharoplasty Performed?

During a blepharoplasty procedure, the plastic surgeon will make an incision to follow the natural lines of the patients eyelids. The appearance of scars is minimized with this technique. The incision is made just below the eyelashes for the lower eyelid blepharoplasty. To reduce the appearance of crows”s feet at the outer corners of the eyes, your plastic surgeon may extend the incision into the laugh lines. The plastic surgeon will separate the skin from the tissue underneath by using these incisions. The muscle is trimmed, the sagging skin is removed and the fat is extracted. The incisions are closed by using very fine sutures.
In the event that the patient has a fat pocket (bags) under their eyes but no sagging skin, a certain style of blepharoplasty which is known as a “transconjuntial blepharoplasty” will be performed. During this technique, the incision is placed inside of the lower eyelid and there will not be any excess skin removed. This technique is commonly performed on younger patients with much more elastic skin.

How long does a Blepharoplasty Procedure take?

It all depends on whether you will be having upper eyelids or lower eyelids or both done. The procedure will take anywhere between 1 hour and 2.5 hours.

Our Blepharoplasty Patients

Blepharoplasty is the third most popular cosmetic procedure for both men and women. Blepharoplasty patients tend to be older and only about 4% of patients are under 35 years of age and 60% are over the age of 50. The best patients for blepharoplasty are men and women who are physically very healthy and who have a realistic expectation regarding what this surgery can and can’t do for them.

What are the risks involved with this procedure?

Fortunately, when performed by a competent cosmetic surgeon, complications are rare and infrequent and quite minor. All patients will have bruising and inflammation for a few days post procedure. Also, a temporary condition with the closure of the eyelids is often seen. Some patients have temporary blurring of the vision which is after due to the medications applied to the incisions post op. Not very commonly, the lower eyelid may be pulled down and cause what is called an “ectropion. If a patient has this, it is usually resolved on it’s own. If it does not resolve on its own, a revision surgery may be necessary.
